IA Poetry

In Lit class the other day, we read Poe's "The Raven" and then had to write a poem imitating him on a subject of our choice. Unfortunately, despite our having a snow day the next day, we still had to write it. So I was sitting at home on said snow day and instead of participating in any of the traditional snow day festivities I had to write a poem. Surprisingly, I quite enjoyed writing it, and I hope you'll see why. Please leave comments to let me know what you think!!! (o btw- it was a Wednesday when I wrote this. The 'day of Thor' refers to Thursday)
YAY I finally got it on YouTube!!! Remember to rate, comment, and favorite! (If you know who always says that you're a cool person. If not, ask me)

“The Raven” Pastiche

Once upon a day so bright, and the ground covered in white,

I gently arose to a sound of knocking softly at my bedroom door.

I noticed that it was quite late, so I began to await

The news that, as I tossed and turned, I was hoping for.

The words that, as I fell asleep, I was hoping for.

And my hopes began to soar.

Then from outside came a voice, which said the schools had made the choice

To close and let most everyone have more time to snore.

I went back to sleep just then, and was just relaxing when

The voice was back and telling me: “A great day is in store!

You had better get up now; a great day is in store!”

And my mom I can’t ignore.

When had passed many an hour, as time’s so easy to devour,

An awful thought occurred to me, indeed I almost swore.

I could not push the thought away: I had homework on a snow day!

That winter wonderland wasting work that I so abhor!

The bane of my existence: oh homework I abhor!

I was not happy anymore.

First I tackled mathematics, a labor not so charismatic,

Then I put it all away and stuck it in the drawer.

I sat there trying not to think of the days when my homework took a mere eye blink

With only one task at a time, ah, the days of yore.

When I had time to myself, ah, the days of yore.

That doesn’t happen anymore.

I thought to myself, “Could that be it? Is it already time to quit?

Indeed, nothing else is due tomorrow, on the day of Thor!”

But soon came the thought: “O Goodness! Something here is really amiss!

I must get started on my Lit homework; this will be a bore.

I can’t believe that I forgot. This will be a bore.

I should have started it before.

What was it we read again? A bird, I think… A goose? Or hen?

I do remember her yelling something as we cascaded out the door.

Was it by Edgar Allen Poe? I hope not, he scares me so.

Do I have to write a poem? Oh, that is such a chore.”

I sure hoped I had remembered wrong: writing is such a chore.

I could not do this anymore.

Suddenly I recalled the Internet! Dang it! ‘The connection was reset!’

It seems Blackboard is always down: it can hurt our esprit de corps.

Could I try Wikipedia? No, teachers don’t like the free encyclopedia.

I couldn’t understand it: it’s never lied to me before!

So what if anyone can edit? It’s never lied to me before.

Teachers need to trust it more.

So after all this pondering, letting my mind do its wandering,

I come to where I am right now, on the damp and dreary floor.

How can I write 40 lines? Look how many words a poet combines…

What if I could make all my ponderings into a poem? Or…

I could just use all the thoughts I’ve had, and then accept my score!

That’s all I’ll do, and nothing more.

Phew! Now that I’m done with it― What?! I’ve got an e-mail from Ms. Belzyt!

“Read ‘The Bells’” it says to me; oh, there is always something more!

I might as well have gone to school! This is totally not cool!

I think I will just go next time and save myself the bore.

And with that it’s time to go to bed; this day was such a bore.

Quoth the student, “Nevermore.”

Hey Josh!
The poem was hilarious! That's just how I felt on snow days. I was like "yesss... I'm done" at like 4pm and then I get emails from my teachers that tell me to do something else.
