Specific Origin of the Term: Well actually this one was coined in middle school, before I was at IA. However, the person who coined it (and henceforth whose name in in the Language of Origin) does now go to IA, so it's in the IAtionary. Our lockers were next to each other, and we were both there, me wearing something that falls into this category. She tuns to me and says calmly, "Linden, you have the best nerd shirts." And it stuck. There you go.
